Tash and I found this book at a market and we both thought the cover was adorable. We also collect books relating to photography so it was a great find.
The spine was missing but that did not deter us - I just made a new one. As you can see from the images, I constructed a new spine out of card and book cloth. An easy task once you know what you are doing.
It's really amazing that you repair book bindings and covers. I love books and have many old ones but really have a great feeling of sadness or loss when a book becomes old and tattered. On one hand it often shows it was well read but sometimes we all know too well a book has not been well looked after. What inspires you to do this? I am asking simply because it must be never ending. I find it fascinating.

Thanks for your comments everyone!
ReplyDeleteClara - I am a conservator by profession, working in photograph, paper and book conservation. I have always loved old things and it was a dream of mine to learn how to look after them. I agree though, repair work could be never ending. I don't repair everything - rather, I try to preserve them. It is very rewarding and I feel lucky to be able to do something that I love for work.
Anyway, I thought it would be nice to share some of the projects I do at home and I am really happy to hear that people are enjoying my posts. Enjoy the rest of the weekend! Ames xo
Thank you so much...it makes me think of a lot of the books I have and cherish.
